Made from a beautiful, high end quality, English leather, not only do these bridles look the part they are super soft to the touch.

This revolutionary design incorporates a padded headpiece to help reduce poll pressure and resistance, a padded noseband with a concealed flash fixing allowing it to be used as a Cavesson noseband without the flash attachment showing and buckles on both ends of the throatlash for maximum adjustability. A long headpiece prevents pinching from the browband and the slip head from the noseband treads over the top reducing poll pressure and head tilting. The bridle can also be easily adapted to a double bridle by sliding the slip head over the top of the headpiece to reduce poll pressure, alternatively it can be treaded underneath should the horse be strong and need some poll pressure.

The format of the championship involves combinations completing an Inter II test and a freestyle with scores being combined to decide the overall champion. Held on the Saturday evening, the freestyle tests attracted a large audience to see who was going to come out victorious.

Sally Walker and Wilton Wood Blaze were the victorious combination in the Silver Section and the Gold section title was taken by Lewis Carrier and Rubico.

With gusts of over 50mph, the team at Arena UK did a fantastic job ensuring the show ran smoothly despite the extreme weather conditions they were faced with. Some amazing results were achieved any new champions were crowned.

A sunny start to the week didn't last for long as the weekend came along and Storm Amy made an appearance. Sunshine, storms and smiles were observed over the five days of dressage, with 32 titles in contention, from Prelim to Inter II, including freestyles, and over 800 tests were ridden across four arenas.

LeMieux National Dressage Championships 2025

We were delighted to see many of our customers had qualified for this prestigious event and were in with a chance to contest many of the titles on offer. Despite a number of very heavy downpours and torrential winds that didn't stop many fabulous combinations from shining.

We returned to the Lemieux National Dressage Championships at Somerford Park, Cheshire last weekend where a number of very heavy downpours and torrential winds didn't stop many fabulous combinations from shining. With 34 national titles in contention, from Prelim to Grand Prix, including freestyle and young horse classes, it was a busy four days with over 700 tests ridden across three arenas.

Leather is a perishable material, if it is not cleaned regularly and taken care off the life expectancy is greatly reduced. Colour loss and premature aging of stitching and leather are factors contributed to by lack of maintenance.

The leather used to make all Sue Carson Saddles products, from saddles to bridles and knee boots to webbers, needs to be carefully maintained to ensure it remains soft and supple for years to come. We recommend not to use substances which contain alcohol or detergents to clean your Sue Carson Saddles leather goods.

In order to keep leather products looking and feeling their best, Sue Carson Saddles have developed a natural leather cleaning balm, which comes with the assurance to increase the life expectancy of all new Sue Carson Saddles leather products.

The Sue Carson Saddles T-Bar Webbers are revolutionary stirrup leathers made without buckles. It is imperative to consider saddle fit when there are changes in exercise, feeding and management of horses, which will often occur as the seasons change. The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) recommends having your saddle refitted every 12-16 weeks, thus ensuring the correct fit of the saddle and contributing to optimal performance and comfort of your horse.

The templates in the image above illustrate the changes of a five year old gelding in a four week period, highlighting the importance of regular fittings through seasonal changes, growth and maturation. It is important for owners, riders and grooms to monitor horses as individuals, like humans their bodies respond differently, and will require different amounts of maintenance, whether this be a saddle fit every four weeks or every 16 weeks. You wouldn’t wear shoes or a hat that didn’t fit properly, so think of it in the same way for your horses saddle fit.

ERIC LE TIXERANT GIRTH

Designed by Eric Le Tixerant, the Tixerant girth takes equine comfort to a whole different level. Featuring an elasticated panel in the centre allowing for increased mobility of the rib cage and of its musculature, promoting respiratory capacity improvements.

The panel is shaped to reduce pinching of the skin behind the elbows and is lined with an ergonomic sternum pad made of natural non-slip alveolar rubber. Thanks to its unique design with a cross as the inner shape, the pas fits perfectly to the thorax preventing the saddle from slipping.

Seasonality of Body Changes and Importance of Saddle Fit

Your saddle is a crucial part of your horse's performance and should be maintained alongside everything else. Unfortunately, all too often this is not as high up the priority list as it should be. It is imperative to consider saddle fit when there are changes in exercise, feeding and management of horses, which will often occur as the seasons change.

It is widely accepted that in wild horse populations there are seasonal fluctuations in body weight, predominantly due to the availability of food. There is generally more food available from spring through to autumn than there is over winter, resulting in weight gain and fat store development, which is then utilised over the winter months as a source of energy. In the domestic horse population these variations in the fat stores may be less dramatic as their food intake and body condition are more closely monitored and controlled, however research has shown that the fat stores do increase over the spring and summer in many horses. Horses that are in higher intensity training or that undergo prolonged exercise over the summer months compared to the winter months may experience a reduction in their fat stores, this is because they will utilise the fat stores for energy which has built up during the time of lower intensity exercise or if they have had a winter break. There is a lot of focus on preventing your horse or pony from becoming overweight in spring and summer to reduce the risk of health issues such as Laminitis, however very little attention is drawn to the effects that these seasonal changes in the fat stores and muscle mass from inconsistent exercise regimes have on saddle fit, which has a direct influence on horse welfare and performance.

With the limited research available, it shows that the seasons have a significant influence on back measurements of horses, with a narrowing of the measurements over the winter months (October-February) and broadening out again from March onwards. The changes in seasons frequently reflect a change in the exercise regimes. The intensity, duration and frequency of training are all contributing factors to horses back measurement changes through fluctuations in muscle mass as a response to exercise. It is imperative to consider saddle fit when there are changes in exercise, feeding and management of horses, which will often occur as the seasons change.

Saddle fitting is a process requiring attention to detail and patience to ensure optimal results. A thorough assessment of both horse and rider should be undertaken to understand the whole picture and is a process which should not be rushed. Understanding any veterinary, physiotherapy, osteopathy and farrier history highlights any particular areas requiring more maintenance, which in turn may impact how the horse moves under saddle. It is also important to understand any medical history relating to the rider. As more research is being undertaken, findings are starting to show that asymmetric riders are causing asymmetries in horses, which will have a direct impact on saddle fit as the saddle is an interface between the horse and rider.

Winter Riding: Staying Comfortable in Cold Weather

Cold weather should not freeze your riding ambitions. At Sue Carson Saddles, we believe that with the right preparation winter riding can be productive and enjoyable.

As equestrians, we tend to dread the winter months - cold and damp days, dark nights, freezing temperatures, snow and mud! We think we have survived the winter and then it strikes back and merges into spring! This should not put a freeze on your riding ambitions. At Sue Carson Saddles, we believe that with the right preparation winter riding can be productive and enjoyable. Here's how to stay warm and safe during the winter months.

Dress the Part

Layering is your friend. Thermal base layers, wind-resistant and waterproof outerwear, and a thick mid layer can make the world of difference. Investing in a good pair of sturdy, waterproof, well insulated boots will help keep your feet warm and dry. A warm pair of gloves helps keep the circulation to your fingers - there is nothing worse than freezing cold hand! During the colder temperatures try putting a pair of latex gloves inside your normal gloves, this helps trap the heat.

Don't forget your horse - using an quarter sheet helps keeps their muscles warm and supple, reducing strain and injury risks. Stay Safe

Allow your warm-up sessions to be a bit longer to help your horses muscles acclimatise and to reduce the risk of injury. If you are wanting to turn your horse out in the snow, a great top tip is to rub Vaseline or equivalent on the sole of their hoof as this stops snow from balling up in their feet!

Hysterectomy Recovery to Reserve Regional Champions in just 8 weeks!

From a full hysterectomy on 20th November 2024 to returning competing in just eight weeks and becoming Reserve Regional Advanced Medium Gold Freestyle Champions.

On Wednesday 20th November 2024 I underwent a full Hysterectomy. There was no right time to have it done, not being certain on the recovery time afterwards. Having spoken to many other people within the equestrian industry regarding my recovery I was put more at ease that I wouldn’t be out of action for a prolonged period of time. I was told by the hospital not to do anything or lift anything for four weeks and that I would hopefully be able to ride again in around four to six weeks depending on how I was feeling and 30 days later I was back on board, immediately I could feel a difference in how I sat. After being careful for the first few rides I was then confident to get stuck in and carry on training.

Before the operation we sat down and made a training and competition plan. The aim was to be back riding and competition fit for the Winter Regionals at Mysercough towards the end of February, 12 weeks post surgery. Just five and a half weeks post surgery that plan changed! We decided to reroute to Onley, the first of the Winter Regionals.

On the lead up Regionals I had a number of training sessions with Paul Fielder. We both felt like I was riding and sitting so much better, that I could now sit deep in the saddle and wrap my legs around the horse again, also helped by our new dressage model the Lincoln, something that looking back on I had found quite difficult to do over the past few years.

Feeling motivated, confident and stronger we went to Onley Winter Regionals on Wednesday 15th January, eight weeks post surgery, to contest the Advanced Medium Gold and Advanced Medium Gold Freestyle, feeling very under prepared! No pre Regional competition, no test riding practice and no time to check whether the music still fits due to over a week of snow, which meant our last outing was in September 2024.

Despite all of this we had a great time, I could not have been happier with the results. Both myself and Lenny felt stronger, the music fit perfectly and we gained our golden ticket to the Winter Championships in the Advanced Medium Gold Freestyle becoming Reserve Regional Champions with 72.28%. We also placed 4th in the very strong Advanced Medium Gold with 68.29%, fingers crossed this will be enough for a wildcard!

For anyone considering a hysterectomy and feeling apprehensive about recovery or its impact on your riding, I would fully recommend and encourage you to have it done. I wish I'd had mine done sooner. The positive impact it has had on my life right from the start of recovery has been amazing and I now feel like I have many more years ahead of me riding!

Petplan Equine Area Festival and Sue Carson Saddles Middle Tour Championships 2024

With a torrential amount of rain experienced at the start of the Championships week it was down to the hard work of the Arena UK grounds team to keep the show on the road! They did just that and an amazing experience was had by all.

Torrential rain during the start of the week didn't stop the Championships from going ahead. The decision was made on Tuesday afternoon to postpone of the outdoor classes on the Wednesday to weekend as the arenas were completely underwater. With a lot of hard work from the grounds team at Arena UK the arenas had over 120,000 litres of water pumped from them during Tuesday night and by the weekend the site was unrecognisable to the start of the week. Sunshine and smilies were observed over the five days of dressage, with 32 titles in contention, from Prelim to Inter II, including freestyles, and over 700 tests were ridden across four arenas.

We were delighted to see many of our customers had qualified for this prestigious event and were in with a chance to contest many of the titles on offer.

Sue Carson Saddles Middle Tour Championship

Alongside the Petplan Equine Area Festival Championship was the Middle Tour Championship which we were delighted to be title sponsors of for the second year running. The format of the championship involves combinations completing an Inter II test and a freestyle with scores being combined to decide the overall champion. Held on the Saturday evening was the freestyle tests which attracted an audience to see who was going to come out victorious along with many riders who aspire to work their way up the levels who were staying over ready for their Prelim classes on Sunday.

Chrissie Havis and Beckhouse Piano Blue were the victorious combination in the Silver Section and the Gold section title was taken by Edward Johnson and Ramasjang A.

It was wonderful to see so many combinations come forwards in this championship from all over the country, along with our customer Naomi Aguilar and Whitehawk Dancing Fire, from Jersey, Channel Islands, who placed 8th in the Inter II Silver and 11th in the Silver Freestyle, overall finishing in 11th place.

Congratulations to all those who took part, you should all be very proud of your hard work, to qualify for this event is an achievement in itself! We wish everyone the best of luck moving forward to the Winter season for whatever challenges or journeys you make embark on. We hope to see many of you returning to competition and out and about very soon!

LeMieux National Dressage Championships 2024

We were delighted to see many of our customers had qualified for this prestigious event and were in with a chance to contest many of the titles on offer. Despite experiencing every season across the four days of competition spirits were not dampened at this years championships.

With four seasons experienced in the equivalent number of days, the rain and hail did not dampen the spirits at the Lemieux National Dressage Championships at Somerford Park, Cheshire. With 32 national titles in contention, from Prelim to Grand Prix, including music and young horse classes, it was a busy four days with over 650 tests ridden across three arenas.

We were delighted to see many of our customers had qualified for this prestigious event and were in with a chance to contest many of the titles on offer.
